Vietnam 2008

In late 2008 I set off to travel to Asia again - this time to Vietnam and Cambodia. Starting the three-week trip in Hanoi and working south from there via Hue and Hoi An to Saigon the Vietnamese part of the journey ended in a boat trip up the Mekong river to Phom Phenh in Cambodia.

This site shows some of the photos and impressions of different places in Vietnam. The North features highlights such as the world famous Ha Long Bay, and rural villages of white and black Thai as well as the magestic lakes and hills of Ninh Binh.

In the centre near Hue, the cultural capital, and Da Nang the remenants of the Vietnam War are a lot more apparent. Tree-less hilltops are silent witnesses to dioxin and agent orange. Yet here, in the centre of the country, where the war was most virulent, miraculously survived the city of Hoi An - unharmed thanks to a sanded up river.

The south features the legendary city of Saigon, a buzzing metropolis, capital of the scooter and small bike. From here the journey went on by boat on the Mekong river, life giver in the region with its moods and floating cities and markets.
